Case Study: Case Studies of FullDome Storytelling Projects – Yan Breuleux and Rémi Lapierre
In this interesting talk Yan and Rémi describe how their approach changed over multiple projects. They describe how they eventually come to designing a 3D core that can be used across projects that have various different outputs and formats.
They go into more detail on their system design in the following slide:
I think the logical breakdown of their system schematic makes a lot of sense. By building a toolset and workflow that is reusable across projects time can be saved and iterations will further improve the system. This also hints at the power and capabilities of Touch Designer being able to operate as the 3D core across so many project types.
Another important takeaway I got from this talk was the emphasis on how the space is an important part of the experience for immersive experience design. To take a quote from in this presentation:
One of the trade secrets behind the design of entertaining themed environments is that the story element is infused into the physical space a guest walks or rides through. In many respects, it is the physical space that does much of the work of conveying the story the designers are trying to tell. Color, lighting and even the texture of a place can fill an audience with excitement or dread”.

Another interesting takeaway was from the part where the talk goes into how colours have been used to represent certain musical notes. The slide below shows how various people have represented notes with colour and it is obvious that there are widely different interpretations of this. I find this interesting because it suggests an artist can make their own interpretations of the colours of sounds and it likely won’t be rejected by audiences.
Thoughts
I will aim to replicate this modular schematic approach to system design as it will allow me to develop projects which can be adapted to various mediums and settings. Also key to my future projects I feel is the sentiment of the story being infused into the physical space that the audience enters.
