Case Study: Vincent Houzé and Dave & Gabe – Créatures

An audiovisual performance in a fulldome.
This piece was a collaboration between Vincent Houzé who was responsible for the visuals, and Dave and Gabe who controlled the sound.
The piece uses an immersive fulldome projection space, along with spatialized sound (speakers all around the dome).
An ode to the diversity of life forms on earth, Créatures explores various semi abstract ecosystems, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, made of algorithmic landscapes, plants and creatures, whose combined simple behaviours give rise to an emerging complexity.
Créatures is an immersive audio-visual experience with real time graphics and spatial sound in which the visuals and the sounds interact seamlessly, mutually driving each other.
The collaborators go into technical detail on certain aspects of their system in a couple of Youtube videos.
Vincent uses TouchDesigner for the visuals while Dace and Gabe use Ableton Live as the audio engine.
There is also an installation version which they created that doesn’t need performers.
What strikes me about these pieces are the generative visuals which trigger sounds, and the potential for live performance outlined in the talks.
The system looks like this
This brought Dante to my attention as a recommended proprietary solution for routing audio over networks.
I also discovered Spat; a software suite for spatialization of sound signals in real-time intended for musical creation, postproduction, and live performances.
This could be very useful if I decide to use spatial sound.
